Andalusian Arabs (133) vs Zapotec (285)

The next competition to prepare for was the Dorset Dodderers, a midweek event Paul had arranged at Entoyment. The theme was any army from 493AD to 1066AD, but no foot or mounted Knights; hence the earlier preparation with the Andalusian Arabs. Paul offered me a quick practice game before the competition against his Zapotecs. I was invited to attack in the plains. My Army deployed with the Heavy Cavalry command and the brilliant CinC on the left and an Infantry command with Heavy Spearmen, light infantry and bowmen and Javelinmen to negotiate any difficult terrain. Meanwhile the Light cavalry command was once again sent on a flank march to the right.

I was somewhat wary of the enemy ambushes in the plantation, and as one might have predicted the enemy had decided to try and load their position with terrain. I was certainly wary of overcommitting the Cavalry and hence led with the infantry command.

The Cavalry were eventually brought forward to support the flank of the infantry command.

And the enemy deigned to come to meet us on our ground, their missile fire before contact was irritating but not debilitating, on balance we inflicted more than we received.

This pattern continued into the following rounds as the enemy line broke under the weight of the Andalusian attack. However, at this stage the flank march had still not yet arrived, and hence my cohesion was only 19 and although I was not losing many units at this stage the cohesion hits from fire and combat were increasing.

The enemy centre has been destroyed, but on the flanks they are surviving and prospering. Not least was the destruction of the Andalusian Javelinmen and bowmen. However, the flank march has not turned up which means my losses are now more acute than they would have been normally!

Outcome

A Zapotec victory by inflicting 19 wounds with 6 missing that never arrived, on the plus side we destroyed 26 of the 28 in the Zapotec army. A moral victory?

Lessons Learnt

  • I finally remembered to break off Heavy Cavalry in contact that prevented even more losses.
  • On balance I was correct to be aggressive in spite of the missing flank march.
