Thracians(63) vs Judeans(103)

My final outing of the day was to take my Thracians into battle, taking on Paul’s Popular Judean Front! The Thracian army I chose, as there are multiple variants in the list, was that of Odrysian Kingdom. The list includes Imitation Legionaries and pseudo-Roman Horsemen. I even printed some 15mm Thracians of and painted them in double quick time for the army.

I threw my Cavalry out wide on the right, with my legionaries in the centre with the Thracian’s on the left ready to move into the wood.

The Judaeans used the terrain in the centre to help protect their flanks. However, the gully did cramp their ability to move their cavalry through it in order to protect the left of their line. Meanwhile in seizing the hill the question was when should I advance off it to engage the enemy.

Once the Jadean cavalry had negotiated the gully they were able to defend their line which advanced forward to engage my legionaries. My cavalry has decided that now is the time to deploy.

Contact! Wait Out. In the woods we traded blows with equal losses. Meanwhile my legionaries are struggling on contact. While the cavalry despite the odds in their favour are also suffering losses at the hands of Judaean cavalry.

A remarkable turnaround by the Legionaries sees the Thracian’s starting to break the Judaean centre. The fight in the wood is being one by the Thracian hill tribes. However, the cavalry are currently failing to deal with the enemy cataphracts.

I an a veritable see-saw of a game, the Thracian’s are losing the battle for the woods. Meanwhile the legionaries are repositioning themselves to fight on two fronts. However, in the most remarkable turn around the Thracian cavalry have destroyed the Judaean allied Parthian cataphracts.

The Judean centre right is starting to make in-roads and is destroying as many legionaries as it can. In a vain attempt to hold back the Thracian cavalry a lone unit tries to counterattack.

At the end there is one legionary unit left standing from the 6 that started the battle. But the losses to the Judaean allied cavalry are also equally damaging.

Outcome

A win for the Thracians by 24 out of 26 losses to the Judaean 27 losses. A very close game that could have gone either way.

Lessons Learnt

  • My gully was a game changer on the flank; well at least in my opinion.
