Song Chinese (225) vs Han Chinese (116)
With time accelerating towards Beachhead it was time to finalise Army choice and get some more practice in. So once more into the breach stepped Robbin with his Han dynasty to fight the Song Dynasty, He invited ne to attack in the plains. We deployed with the cavalry out on the left. In the centre and right I continued to deploy my heavy polearm units behind the crossbows to allow them to interpenetrate to amid the coup de grace to the victims of the Crossbows- or at least that is the plan.
As the armies closed the right wing has expanded to reduce the threat of enemy slipping by with their beach towels on our right. The enemy crossbows have started to find the range, but clearly our bow strings are much too damp to give us any chance of hitting the enemy.
The enemy are clearly winning the firefight, but now they are also winning the combats, as the cavalry engage the enemy right.
Well would you believe it, the Song cavalry have done the nasty on their Han enemies, now all they need to do is complete the job and sweep around the enemy flank. In the centre the firefight continues, but now we seem to have found the range and enemy casualties are mounting.
The cavalry has failed to follow through on their initial positive results and are now gamely holding on. In the centre the heavy polearms have moved forward with the crossbows moving around to the flank.
The remaining Song cavalry are now withdrawing, the best that can be said is that they took some of the enemy with them. In the field the results have been devastating despite the level of attrition eventually caused by the Song crossbows the subsequent combats when they engaged the enemy were dire. Moreover, despite a partial breakthrough we were unable to exploit it. In the end there was no need for the Han left to even try to move down the coastline!
Outcome
A Han dynasty win by only suffering 16 of 24 hits.
