Arab Indians (135) vs Abbasid Arab (134)

Another Thursday, another excellent day for a couple of games at Entoyment; this time once again (it looks like being a regular play-date) we were joined by gentlemen from the Wessex Wargaming Society. It was therefore a pleasure to play Dave with his Abbasid Arabs (an army I had used at Roll Call last year – unsuccessfully). I won the initiative and decided to attack in the plains. I planned correctly and placed my Cavalry on the correct wing; the right. The foot centre with the shock troops (the elephant et al) on the left. Spoiler alert; the only Indians that were ready painted for the army was the Elephant, the remainder were Arabs brought into the army to play as Indians.

On my left we were outnumbered in horse by 13 to 8, but fortunately at this stage some of this number were screened by their own foot. I considered it important for the foot to close the gap and support the horse. Not least was to get the bowmen's firepower in range of the enemy horse.

First issue was to engage the enemy light cavalry to clear the way for the main event. Although the Hindu Light Cavalry with Javelins have done well, the supported Hindu medium cavalry couldn't achieve a victory over their lighter opponents.

On the left the Elephant has engaged and looks like it will secure a victory, while we have allowed the enemy infantry to chase down the Hindu Light Cavalry which have evaded. On the right the medium cavalry is continuing to struggle against their opponents. However, where it matters the horse numbers will be equal on contact.

On the left the Elephant has now wheeled to its left and is supporting the attack against the bowmen. In the centre the inevitable contact between the opposing forces has been made. However, my spearmen have come of worse against the enemy spears, however help is at hand with the remainder of their brethren ready to sweep around the enemies open right flank; that is if we can persuade the enemy light cavalry to abandon the fight! Although the cavalry fight has been a draw, the medium cavalry on their right is being overrun by the enemy.

In the second round of cavalry combat we have prevailed at the expense of one of our heavy spearmen. Unfortunately, we couldn't persuade the enemy light cavalry to abandon their flank at this stage. On the left the enemy bowmen are proving stubborn, while on the right the last of the medium cavalry is trying itself to stave of the inevitable.

The attempt to work around the left flank of the enemy centre has failed with the enemy light cavalry destroying one of our bowmen units sent into break that flank. On the right the medium cavalry has survived again which should allow the heavy cavalry to reorientate themselves to the threat. On the left our light cavalry has swept around the enemy flank and are now positioned to help the elephant destroy the remainder of the enemy's right wing.

The light cavalry has been sent deeper into the enemy's position to threaten their camp, while on the right the medium cavalry survived long enough for the heavy cavalry to regroup and re-enter the fight.

Outcome

An Arab Indian victory losing 20 of their 26 cohesion points.

Lessons Learnt

  • A hard fought battle, where poor command and control prevented decisive action.
  • The enemy light impact cavalry prevented us wrapping around the right flank of the enemy centre; all hail them.
