New Kingdom Egyptians (14) vs Vedic Indian (35))

Fortunately, I was still within the time window to resubmit a revised army list, which I duly did. Kevin again kindly offered to do battle against the revised Egyptian Army to let me try it out!

The revised army had the majority of the impetuous medium swordsmen together in one of two largish command supported by armoured light chariots. The other large command had the heavy swordsmen and regular impact medium swordsmen along with armoured light chariots. The final command was a smaller command with light troops and the remaining impetuous medium swordsmen.

So with this orbat I sent the impetuous swordsmen through the centre to try and punch a hole through the line. They were flanked on their right by the other large command with the smaller command operating on the left.

The one thing about this period is can get very bloody ery quickly once the troops come into contact and games are won or lost very quickly.

So in the centre, and despite some cohesion hits, the plan seems to be working. We have achieved some success with the medium impetuous swordsmen. Meanwhile on the right we are closing in on the camp.

The trouble starts when you dominance is undone by poor command or poor combat rolls, which I started to have in abundance. Having said that it was a close game and right up to the last it could have gone either way.

Outcome

A win for the Vedic Indians by 20 to 24. However on subsequent investigation I discovered that I had failed to deploy one mediocre bowman unit!!! To be fair I am not sure what difference it would have made.

Lessons Learnt

  • Get in quick and hard in this period; Biblical armies with a surfeit of medium troops are very fragile.
  • This army was much better balanced, if the medium impetuous swordsmen get into contact against the right opponents they can be deadly.
  • Kevin’s advice was to get the elite heavy impact swordsmen into the battle quickly as they were my best troops; sound advice but how would it work.
