Taifa Kingdom (204) vs Feudal Spanish (190)

So out came the Taifa Kingdom to fight the Feudal Spanish; very historical. This army has a mixture of Heavy and medium impact cavalry, with four knights, and supporting heavy and medium infantry. The cavalry are divided into two wings with an infantry wing. This time, despite the marsh on my right, I could have little or no complaints about the terrain. Unfortunately, my left flanking move was cancelled due to insufficient sea lift available for the operation.

The left flank cavalry moved forward to drive the enemy light cavalry from the battlefield. Whilst on the right the Taifan infantry moved forward to seize the hill. In the centre command broke down and the lighter cavalry were sent forward to engage the enemy light cavalry.

The Spanish knights have move forward to engage, while in the centre the enemy infantry are moving forward supported by their knights. On the right a bit of a stand-off begins, with neither side wishing to overcommit.

On the right the enemy infantry are trying to move around the marsh but the African spearmen have been moved to thwart their ambitions. In the centre The Taifan Christian Knights have engaged their Spanish opponents, while the cavalry move to out flank the line. On the left we have yet to engage, but the lighter cavalry have moved around the enemy’s flank while pursuing the light cavalry.

The Spanish Knights have prevailed both in the centre and on their right; not least because they won on combats rolling ones and twos and destroying units. The Taifan heavy cavalry have pursued to the depth of the enemy position, but it is unsure how long they will survive. On the left a Spanish knight is encircled.

The encircled knight eventually dies, leaving the remaining knight to move forward out of the contact, only to be charged in the rear by a Taifan cavalry unit. Which angered the Nights sufficiently for them to win the combat in outstanding fashion (in ADLG terms the Spanish six-oned the Taifan Medium Impact Cavalry!). There were small losses to the Spanish elsewhere, but this didn’t alter the final outcome.

Outcome

A Spanish win 18 to 23, which we agreed could have been closer were it not for some of my typically bad combat rolls.

Lessons Learnt

  • The knights would fight better if grouped together rather than disaggregated amongst the Cavalry.
