Germans – Batavian Revolt (91) vs Triumvirate Romans (83 )

For my final test of my last re-design of the army before I had to submit it for the competition Robin offered his Triumvirate Romans as test subjects. The final redesign included dropping two of the allied Heavy Swordsmen warbands and replacing them with an integrated bolt shooter for the legions, and a two more light infantry to up my scouting points.

The terrain was very beneficial for me, with the flanks with rough terrain and almost perfect dimensions across the battlefield for my Army. We advanced to attack, and fortunately the bolt shooter was in the right place to attempt some damage on the Triumvirate’s allied Cataphracts.

The Triumvirate started to refuse their right, so we had to swing round to exploit this.

My Legionaries accepted the charge of the Cataphracts and for once were not too badly damaged. The German right wing of warbands severely outnumbers the Triumvirate left wing. On the German left one of the German’s Roman Cavalry has penetrated the enemy line and is ready now to support his legionary peers fighting the Cataphracts.

The Triumvirate left wing has collapsed with the front and flank attack from the warbands. The German and Roman cavalry are giving ground, trading space for time. Meanwhile in the centre, and in spite of the support from the German Roman cavalry, the Cataphracts are holding their own.

The other Roman heavy cavalry unit has been moved to counter the Cataphracts which have broken through. However, the Cataphract that was being assailed in the front and rear has been destroyed. As have all but one of the Triumvirate Legionary units from their left wing.

The remaining Triumvirate allied Cataphracts are now breaking out to threaten the German flank. For the rest of the German right wing it would be some time before command and control could be restored after their rout of the Triumvirate left wing.

Outcome

A win for the Germans by inflicting 20 and receiving only 9 in return.

Lessons Learnt

  • The army was viable and the decision to use the integrated artillery seems to be soundly based.
  • In general a very good example of what can happen when one Army outnumbers its opponent.
